Project 011 - Project Botswana

The soup kitchen in Botswana caters for everybody from very young children to the elderly. Fencing land for growing produce will ensure that the soup kitchen project is self-sustaining.

Bridging the Gap

With a staggering 35% of the population affected by HIV/AIDS, hope seems very unlikely in Botswana. That is why Tony and Johanna Morais founded the Elpis Bridge ministry. ‘Elpis’ is the ancient Greek word for hope and they want to bridge the gap for those desperately in need of a more hopeful future.

The ministry’s main focus is on the dire situation of the orphans and children in Botswana. But they are not the only ones helped by this ministry. The approach is to identify needs and then set up practical projects to address these needs.

Elpis Bridge operates a soup kitchen which provides a substantial hot meal for an age range of children through to the elderly. Now, Tony and Johanna will start farming an area that has been donated. This will enable them to grow food themselves to ensure that the soup kitchen will be sustainable.

They explain, "The time is coming to start ploughing the land. The government has told us that if we want to plough, they will help us plough up to two acres free of charge. This is a great opportunity to use the farmlands to actually start producing vegetables for the soup kitchen. We are making an appeal to all our partners who have it in their hearts to help contribute to the fencing of this land. Without fencing we wouldn’t be able to plough, as crops could be trodden upon by wildlife and straying cattle."

As the numbers coming to eat still grow, this fence will actually serve as a bridge which offers hope to those in need.
