Urgent appeal for new Pump Boats for the island Evangelists.
There are some 200 small islands to the north of Bohol, Philippines which give the impression of being idyllic little paradises and yet the fishermen who live there with their families are in great need. Their diet seems to be fish and nothing else, meaning their children are severely malnourished and prone to disease through vitamin deficiency. In addition the islands are subject to storms. Houses are often built on stilts as the land is occasionally completely swamped by high tides. Faith Tabernacle in Cebu have a ministry to these people and have trained and sent young pastors and workers to them. In the past they have had pump boats which have helped to supply survival packs donated by Childcare Worldwide. During my last visit to Cebu in October 2011 it was planned for me to travel with the workers to the islands. I was prevented from doing so by the presence of a typhoon. Also when I looked at the condition of the boats they were clearly unsafe. They still use two or three boats. Pastor Ben Tagud was also rather fearful for my safety boarding the commercial boats at the port of Pasil close to Cebu City. I wanted to visit an island called Cuaming where there are more than 400 people. My wife Pauline was also concerned when she saw from the photos how the boats are boarded via the narrow gangway without supports! The water below was heavily polluted. We plan to hire a boat to visit some of these islands when I return to the Philippines in April 2012. Some of you may be envious at the thought of me visiting these beautiful desert islands in calm seas. For those who live there life is extremely hazardous. There are workers and pastors willing to live with the fishermen. Some even come from the islands. Packs of food contain sacks of rice, corned beef, vegetables and some tinned goods. Families look forward to the visits of the young pastors and many have responded to their faithful practical ministry. New boats are desperately required so this vital outreach ministry to the island dwellers can continue - please help if you can. Don Foster Siloam’s South East Asia Voluntary Representative |
